June 08, 2023 – Embarking on a mission to strengthen earthquake preparedness and fortify awareness about climate change, the Department of the Interior and Local Government IX actively participated in the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) and organized the Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP) orientation, aimed at arming DILG Regional Office personnel with indispensable insights into climate change and its ramifications, all while honing their readiness for earthquake scenarios.

In a collaborative effort with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the NSED provided an invaluable platform for DILG IX personnel to enhance their abilities in effectively responding to earthquake scenarios. Adding an extra layer of complexity to the drill, a simulated fire breakout challenged the participants even further. Despite the brave endeavors of the DILG personnel, the fire could not be contained, resulting in the unfortunate disappearance of one employee. This compelled the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to intervene and conduct a search and rescue operation, ultimately leading to the successful extraction of an unconscious DILG employee.

After the earthquake drill, a captivating session was held to delve into the realm of climate change and its profound implications. The objective was to awaken consciousness among DILG personnel about the all-encompassing nature of climate change and its wide-ranging repercussions. By emphasizing the urgency of taking proactive steps, such as curbing air-conditioning consumption within the office premises, DILG IX is actively contributing to the collective endeavor of lessening the impact of climate change.

Climate change is a pressing concern that impacts every individual, underscoring the need for government agencies such as DILG IX to spearhead the adoption of sustainable practices as a shining model. By engaging in events like the NSED and the LCCAP orientation, DILG personnel not only enhance their emergency response capabilities but also actively contribute to endeavors aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.

With unwavering dedication, DILG IX persists in its mission to champion disaster preparedness and foster resilience in the face of climate challenges, shining as a beacon for other institutions and communities to emulate. By embracing knowledge and cultivating awareness, we pave the way for a future that is not only secure but also sustainable, creating a sanctuary where safety and harmony coexist for the betterment of all.
