Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region IX officially launched the 2026 National Women’s Month through a successful conduct of a Free Legal Consultation for Women Deprived of Liberty (WDL) on March 6, 2026, at the Female Dormitory of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology City Jail in Pagadian City.
The initiative was spearheaded by Men Opposing Violence Everywhere (MOVE) – a movement composed of male employees of DILG Region IX who actively advocate for the protection of women’s rights and the promotion of women’s empowerment in society. Through this activity, MOVE champions the role of men as partners in eliminating violence against women and in fostering a culture of respect, equality and support for women in all sectors.
This meaningful kickoff activity aimed to provide accessible legal assistance, promote the rights and welfare of women detainees, and strengthen collaboration with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines – Zamboanga del Sur Chapter through the participation of dedicated volunteer women lawyers.
A key highlight of the event commenced with the delivery of the opening message led by Carmelo Enrique B. Libot, CESO V, Assistant Regional Director and OIC of DILG Region IX, highlighting the importance of ensuring that no woman is left behind in accessing justice and legal support. He emphasized that initiatives such as this demonstrate compassion, shared responsibility, and the collective commitment of government institutions and partners to uplift and support women, especially those in vulnerable circumstances.
Words of support were also delivered by Senior Jail Officer SJO4 Reginagen R. Sala, City Jail Warden, who sincerely expressed heartfelt gratitude to the legal professionals and partners for extending their time and expertise to conduct the free legal consultation for Women Deprived of Liberty (WDL). She emphasized that their presence and willingness to extend legal assistance mean a great deal to the WDLs, as the activity provides them with valuable legal guidance, a deeper understanding of their legal concerns, and renewed hope for a better future.
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), led by Atty. Kenny Sabellano, President of the IBP – Zamboanga del Sur Chapter, facilitated an orientation on the purpose and mechanics of the legal consultation. This was followed by one-on-one consultation sessions between volunteer lawyers and Women Deprived of Liberty (WDL). These consultations provided guidance on legal concerns, case updates, and possible remedies available to the beneficiaries.
Through this MOVE-led initiative, DILG Region IX reaffirms its commitment to advancing women’s empowerment, strengthening access to justice, and promoting inclusive governance. The activity highlights the important role that men can play as advocates and allies in protecting women’s rights and ensuring that every woman – regardless of circumstance – is heard, supported and given the opportunity for dignity and hope.
As the celebration of National Women’s Month continues, DILG Region IX, together with its MOVE advocates and partner agencies, remains committed to implementing meaningful initiatives that promote gender equality, women’s protection, and the empowerment of women in the community.
