At least 90 percent of the provinces, cities and municipalities nationwide have become more transparent during the past year as 1,551 of the 1,713 local government units (LGUs) have complied with the Full Disclosure Policy which requires local governments to post their budget and other financial transactions in websites, newspapers of general circulation and conspicuous places within their localities.

In the Department’s Accomplishment Report for 2011, Secretary Jesse M. Robredo of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said that this high compliance rating can be attributed to the growing awakening among LGUs that good governance is synonymous to transparency.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on Tuesday said that the Department’s fund raising campaign for the victims of Typhoon Sendong, particularly in Mindanao, has already reached around P4-million.

“This is just an initial figure. We are expecting more pledges and contribution from the regional offices and local governments,” said Robredo.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo and Maguindanao Gov. Ismael “Toto” Mangudadatu will visit the massacre site at Ampatuan town today (November 23) to commemorate the second year of the so-called “Maguindanao Massacre” where 58 people, including 33 journalists were mercilessly killed allegedly on orders of the Ampatuan clan led by former Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. and Andal Jr.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo today directed officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection and the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division to effect immediate inspection of all firecrackers and pyrotechnics manufacturers’ stores and plants in the country, particularly in Bulacan, and ensure safety of all products they would sell in the market.

Robredo today directed all governors, mayors and barangay chairmen nationwide to conduct and attend their flag retreat on Friday and rally their constituents to vote – via text message PPUR 2861 or via the Internet – for the Puerto Princesa Underground River in the worldwide search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
