Pursuant to DILG Memorandum Circular 2017-71, the municipality of Mabuhay commemorated the 119th  Independence Day with the theme, Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-samang Balikatin  with all the employees and business sectors at Diosdado Macapagal Gymnasium, Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Offices produced the tarp-designed theme of the celebration while several flags were displayed in the public plaza.

In a short but fitting ceremony early morning of June 12, the town revealed its new Mabuhay theme through audio-visual presentation and series of cultural talents such as singing on  Freedom and independence theme   and dances gave more essence to the gathering.

In attendance were the Municipal Mayor Restituto O. Calonge, Vice mayor Anam H. Dammang, PNP Chief  Glen Tabamo,  SFO4 Baguio and DILG officer Lemuel C. Mejares.

MLGOO Lemuel Mejares provided the rationale and history of the declaration of the Independence Day

"Philippine Independence Day is more than just having to wave a flag and organize celebrations.  It is a reminder of the self-determination of Filipinos to exercise their right to liberty and independence.  It is a legitimate assertion by the Philippine nation of its natural and inalienable claim to freedom and independence, which is an inherent right of every people, not dependent upon the will and discretion of another nation or government,” he said.

He likewise presented a trivia game where everyone is challenged to recall their History 101.

In a message, Municipal Mayor highlighted the deepest symbol of the Philippine flag, its significance to the Filipino people and why we put our hands on our breast while singing the Philippine national anthem.

Immediately, the crowd, headed by the Mayor, proceeded at the Rizal monument and offered flowers and wreaths while singing the “Ang Bayan Ko”.
