The Training Workshop on Structural Analysis and Design (STAAD) for Reinforced Concrete Vertical Structures was held from May 14-16, 2024, at 4 Queens Resort in Pagadian City. The comprehensive three-day training workshop brought together engineers from 25 identified Local Government Units (LGUs). During the opening day of the training, DILG IX Regional Director Paisal O. Abutazil, CESO III, delivered the opening remarks.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to provide in-depth training on using STAAD software for structural analysis and design, to enhance participants’ understanding of reinforced concrete vertical structures, and to facilitate the application of theoretical knowledge to practical design challenges.

The workshop began with an introduction to STAAD, covering the software’s capabilities, user interface, and key features pertinent to reinforced concrete design. This was followed by sessions on the fundamentals of structural analysis, which included discussions on basic design principles, types of loads and load combinations, and the analysis of beams, columns, and slabs.

Participants delved into the detailed design procedures for reinforced concrete vertical structures, focusing on reinforcement detailing, placement, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards. The hands-on training sessions were a major highlight, providing step-by-step guidance on creating and analyzing models in STAAD. These sessions included real-time problem-solving exercises and case studies of existing reinforced concrete structures.

The workshop covered advanced topics including seismic analysis and design considerations, wind load analysis for tall structures, and optimization techniques for structural design. Participants also engaged in group projects, working collaboratively on comprehensive design tasks, which they later presented. These presentations were followed by feedback and evaluations from expert trainers.

The key takeaways from the workshop included enhanced proficiency in using STAAD for structural analysis and design, a deeper understanding of the behavior of reinforced concrete vertical structures, and valuable practical experience gained through hands-on training and real-world case studies. Additionally, the workshop provided excellent networking opportunities with professionals and experts in the field.

The workshop featured distinguished speakers and trainers, including Engr. Lee Christian Chua, Engr. Rom Oliver Perez from DILG ZDS FO, and Engr. Jenny Sagun from DILG ZSP FO. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with comments highlighting the informativeness and practicality of the sessions, as well as the expertise of the instructors. One participant noted, “The workshop was highly informative and practical. The hands-on sessions were particularly beneficial.” Another remarked, “Excellent training with knowledgeable instructors and well-organized sessions.”

Upon completion of the workshop, participants were awarded certificates of completion, acknowledging their proficiency in using STAAD for designing reinforced concrete structures.
