The Training Workshop on the Preparation of Detailed Engineering Design (DED) Standards for Water Supply and Sanitation Systems using EPANET was held from May 9-10, 2024, at 4 Queens Resort, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. This two-day workshop aimed to enhance the technical capabilities of participants in designing efficient and reliable water supply and sanitation systems. Regional Director Abutazil delivered his opening remarks on the first day of the event.

During the workshop, participants achieved several key objectives. They developed proficiency in using EPANET software for modeling and designing water distribution systems. They also gained a comprehensive understanding of the standards and guidelines for preparing detailed engineering designs for water supply and sanitation systems. Real-world case studies and hands-on exercises enabled participants to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.

The workshop agenda was designed to offer participants both foundational knowledge and practical
skills. On the first day, they were introduced to EPANET, learning about its applications and the basics of
water supply and sanitation systems. The second day focused on detailed engineering design standards,
with in-depth discussions and hands-on training sessions on creating and analyzing water distribution
models using EPANET. Advanced modeling techniques were also covered, allowing participants to
simulate complex water distribution scenarios and troubleshoot issues. Following this, participants
worked on group projects where they designed a water supply and sanitation system, presented their
work, and received feedback.

Key takeaways from the workshop included enhanced skills in using EPANET for designing and modeling water supply systems, a thorough understanding of DED standards for water supply and sanitation projects, and practical experience gained through hands-on exercises and real-world case studies. Participants also improved their ability to design efficient, reliable, and sustainable water distribution systems.

The workshop featured Engr. Alzhammer R. Manupac, an expert trainer who had served as an engineer in the DILG for eight years, demonstrating remarkable commitment to excellence and innovation. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. A participant from the Municipality of Imelda commented that he was pleased with the hands-on training workshop and its intensive discussions.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants received certificates of completion, recognizing their proficiency in preparing detailed engineering designs for water supply and sanitation systems using EPANET. The workshop successfully met its objectives, providing essential skills and knowledge to the participants. The positive feedback underscores the effectiveness of the training and the expertise of the instructors. Future workshops are planned to continue building technical capacity in this critical area.
