San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur – The Department of the Interior and Local Government IX conducted the first episode of Layag sa Tulunghaan as part of the Layag Discussion Series, focusing on Navigating the Landscape of Safe Spaces at JH Cerilles State College – Main Campus, Mati, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur, on November 30, 2023.

The DILG arrived at JH Cerilles State College and was warmly welcomed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), Vilma C. Grengia, PhD, and one of the school’s instructors and event coordinators, Joie Mercybelle F. Capitanea.

The Layag sa Tulunghaan kicked off with an opening message from VPAA Grengia, commending the program for supporting colleges in providing students with opportunities to listen to good speakers who are experts in their field and discuss relevant subjects, such as the Safe Spaces Act. The event both amused and inspired the students to strive for greatness, as DILG IX Regional Director Paisal O. Abutazil, CESO III, delivered his opening address.

The curious Political Science students of JHCSC eagerly welcomed the resource person for the event, Atty. Kurt F. Cajeta, as he began sharing his knowledge and expertise on the Safe Spaces Act and Gender-Based Sexual Harassment in various spaces. Atty. Cajeta emphasized the importance of women in the community and their right to speak out in times of harassment. He also participated in an open forum with several students seeking answers and enlightenment for their young minds.

This first Layag sa Tulunghaan activity is in line with the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), empowering the community through education. The DILG IX raised awareness and educated students about gender-based rights. The journey towards a violence-free world is ongoing, and with unity, education, and unwavering dedication, the Department of the Interior and Local Government IX creates a legacy of respect, equality, and safety for generations to come.
