Isabela City, Basilan – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) IX took the lead in organizing an innovative occasion focused on enhancing the operational efficiency of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Local Special Bodies of Isabela City. This three-day affair, which occurred last July 24-26, 2023, had the primary objective of providing CSOs with the essential tools and knowledge required to effectively carry out their vital responsibilities within their respective communities.
The occasion formed a segment of DILG IX’s continuous endeavor to strengthen the partnership between Local Government Units and Civil Society Organizations, with the overarching goal of fostering governance that is both inclusive and participatory. This specific undertaking centered on establishing the People’s Council of Isabela City, a purpose-built forum aimed at facilitating substantial discussions and collaboration between the city’s administrative body and its varied civil society representation.
Having engaged 30 CSOs hailing from the city, the occasion offered a vibrant environment for education, the sharing of ideas, and the enhancement of skills. The sessions were strategically crafted to facilitate a deeper comprehension among CSOs regarding their pivotal positions within local special bodies, empowering them to play an active role in shaping decision-making procedures and policy crafting.
The event commenced with a sincere introductory speech delivered by Vice Mayor Kifli Salliman of Isabela City. He underscored the significance of cooperation between the government and civil society to enhance the well-being of the city’s inhabitants. Vice Mayor Salliman’s words deeply resonated with the attendees, establishing the guiding ambiance for the upcoming days.
During the event, Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin-Hataman also delivered her remarks, showing her endorsement of the initiative and her belief in the favorable results it could bring to the city. She emphasized the importance of CSOs as essential collaborators in advancing sustainable progress and making sure the requirements and dreams of every citizen are taken into account.
Over the course of the three-day gathering, an array of workshops, presentations, and engaging conversations occurred. The subjects addressed encompassed proficient approaches to involvement, comprehension of regional administrative frameworks, championing for policies, and utilizing digital resources to expand outreach efforts.
Attendees not only acquired valuable knowledge from experienced presenters but also had the chance to discuss their personal experiences and difficulties. This encouraged a meaningful interchange of viewpoints, cultivating a feeling of unity among the CSOs and revitalizing their sense of mission.
The event reached its pinnacle with the formal introduction of the People’s Council of Isabela City, a moment that had been eagerly anticipated and that signaled the initiation of a fresh phase of partnership between the local administration and the CSOs. The council is ready to function as a medium for ongoing discussions, addressing challenges, and propelling initiatives grounded in community input.
As DILG IX persists in advocating for inclusive governance and participatory democracy, occasions such as these emphasize the significance of the collaboration between governmental bodies and civil society. By providing Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) with the necessary abilities and information to actively participate in local decision-making, DILG IX is facilitating a path toward governance that is more receptive to the needs of the people and centered around their welfare within the region.
