Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) IX organized an extensive orientation session focused on Gender and Development (GAD) – Related Laws on December 04, 2023, held at the Conference Hall, DILG IX, Balintawak, Pagadian City. 

Willibald Patrick P. Paglinawan, the Chief Administrative Officer, presented the introductory remarks, underscoring the significance of comprehending and incorporating GAD-related laws into the Department’s projects and guidelines. The purpose of the event was to enhance the awareness of DILG IX staff in supporting gender equality and advocating for women’s rights. 

Atty. Angelika U. Vega, Attorney III of DILG IX, played a pivotal role as the distinguished expert guiding participants through crucial facets of GAD-related legislation. Her expertise centered on the Magna Carta of Women, the Safe Spaces Act, and the Expanded Maternity Leave. 

The Magna Carta of Women, a significant legal framework, guarantees the safeguarding of women’s rights and well-being by encouraging their engaged involvement in decision-making across various levels. Atty. Vega offered a detailed analysis of the law’s provisions, underscoring its importance in cultivating an environment that embraces gender inclusivity. 

The Safe Spaces Act, a pivotal  legal framework explored in the orientation, tackles the problem of sexual harassment in public areas. Atty. Vega provided detailed insights into the law’s provisions, offering guidance to the participants regarding its practical implications and the necessary measures for ensuring its enforcement is effective. 

The orientation further explored the Expanded Maternity Leave law, crafted to uphold the well-being of women in the workplace throughout their pregnancy. Atty. Vega provided valuable perspectives on the law’s provisions, underscoring its contribution to fostering a balance between work and personal life and encouraging employment practices that are sensitive to gender issues. 

DILG IX continues its unwavering dedication to championing gender equality and cultivating a work environment that embraces diversity. The GAD-related laws orientation stands as evidence of the Department’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its entire workplace.
