Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur – On September 18, 2023, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) IX took proactive steps to tackle concerns associated with gender-based violence and the safeguarding of the rights of women and children. Acknowledging the urgent necessity to raise awareness and establish a more secure environment, DILG IX initiated a Monthly Convocation with a primary focus on Gender and Development (GAD) – Related Laws.

The resource person for this enlightening gathering was Atty. Kurt F. Cajeta, a legal expert well-versed in the intricacies of gender-sensitive laws. With a packed audience comprising DILG officials and employees, the stage was set for an educational journey into the legal frameworks designed to protect the rights of women and children.

The monthly convocation had the objective of providing its staff with an understanding of several laws that hold a crucial role in protecting the rights and welfare of women and children in our society. In pursuit of this goal, the following laws are emphasized:

RA 9261, known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, stands as a fundamental pillar in safeguarding women and children against various types of violence, encompassing physical, emotional, and economic harm. It underscores the significance of establishing a secure and supportive atmosphere for their well-being.

RA 7877, also known as the Anti-Sexual Harassment Law, focuses on tackling the problem of sexual harassment not only in professional settings but also in associated contexts. It emphasizes the importance of establishing a workplace and similar environments where respect prevails, and individuals are free from harassment.

RA 8353, also known as the Anti-Rape Law, serves as a crucial legal framework that delineates and penalizes the offense of rape while also ensuring that survivors are provided with justice and assistance. This legislation emphasizes the significance of obtaining consent and highlights the severe repercussions for individuals who infringe upon it.

RA 9208, as revised by RA 10364, tackles the serious problem of human trafficking and offers comprehensive measures to combat this issue, demonstrating a strong dedication to eradicating human trafficking and safeguarding its victims.

DILG IX acknowledges that these laws go beyond being mere text on documents; they serve as vital instruments in advancing gender equality, eliminating violence, and safeguarding the rights of women and children. Through this orientation, DILG IX sought to equip its staff with the knowledge and insight required to effectively enforce and support these laws, thereby empowering them in their mission.

By engaging in meaningful conversations, informative presentations, and candid exchanges at the Monthly Convocation, DILG IX nurtured a sense of duty within its workforce to take an active role in eradicating gender-based violence and advancing gender equality. The gathering aimed to cultivate a sense of solidarity within the organization, encouraging its members to passionately advocate for the rights of women and children.

The dedication of DILG IX to increasing awareness and nurturing a safer atmosphere is resolute. By persistently educating, involving, and motivating their staff, they play a crucial role in advancing the collective mission of establishing a society in which women and children can exist free from fear, bias, or harm. This activity focusing on GAD-Related Laws represents merely a single stride in their ongoing quest for a more equitable and righteous future.
