Pagadian City – To address the demands of time in addressing the disaster risk reduction and management concerns, the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region IX will conduct Training of Trainers (ToT) on the Geographic Information System (GIS) for Disaster Preparedness and Response (DPR) on August 18-20, 2014 at Chandler Suites, Pagadian City.

 

   The training aims to capacitate the local government units in generating LGU maps through the use of GIS, a set of tools for storing, retrieving, and transforming the displayed spatial data from the real world for particular set of purposes.

   Moreover, it also multiplies technical people who would assist the barangays in making their Barangay Hazard Maps.

   Some 50 participants are expected from the targeted city and municipality to attend namely: the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officers, Planning and Development Coordinators, Local Government Operations Officers, Information Technology Planning and Development Officers and the Engineers all from the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay.

   According to DRRM Regional Focal Person Teresita Catalbas the selection of the targeted LGUs are prioritized based on the most vulnerable areas in the province.

” These identified areas include Dipolog City, Dapitan City, Siocon and Labason of Zamboanga del Norte; Bayog, Margosatubig, Molave and Pagadian City of Zamboanga del Sur; and Diplahan, and Imelda of Zamboanga Sibugay. Also included is the City of Zamboanga.”, she said.

   Participants of the event are also requested to bring along with them their laptops, GPS or android phones for the coaching and orientation in the installation of the software.
