Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur – May 27-28, 2024 – The Training Workshop on Contract Management and Construction Supervision was held on May 27-28, 2024, at 4 Queens Resort in Pagadian City. This comprehensive 2-day workshop brought together engineers and construction professionals from 30 identified Local Government Units (LGUs). Regional Director Paisal O. Abutazil delivered the opening remarks, setting the stage for a productive and informative event.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to provide in-depth training on contract management principles and practices, enhance participants’ understanding of effective construction supervision, and facilitate the application of theoretical knowledge to practical project management challenges.

On the first day, the focus was on contract management. The initial session provided an overview of contract management principles and their importance in construction projects. Participants discussed different types of contracts and their applications, and examined key components of a construction contract, including scope of work, terms and conditions, and specifications.

Subsequent sessions delved into the steps involved in contract formation and negotiation, with case studies illustrating successful negotiations. Risk management in contracts was another critical topic, covering the identification and assessment of risks, strategies for risk allocation and mitigation, and the role of insurance and bonds. The day concluded with a session on contract performance and monitoring, highlighting tools and techniques for tracking project progress and ensuring compliance with contract terms.

The second day was dedicated to construction supervision. The first session outlined the roles and responsibilities of a construction supervisor, emphasizing the importance of supervision in ensuring project quality and safety, and discussing key skills and attributes of an effective supervisor. Planning and scheduling techniques were covered next, including the use of project management software and tools, with case studies on successful project execution. Quality control and assurance principles were then explored, focusing on methods for inspecting and testing construction materials and workmanship, and strategies for addressing quality issues. The final session addressed health, safety, and environmental (HSE) management, offering an overview of relevant regulations and best practices, and the supervisor’s role in promoting a safe work environment. This session included case studies on HSE management and incident prevention.

The workshop featured distinguished speakers and trainers, including Engr. Vaneza Flor Tompong from DILG ZDS FO, Engr. Jenny Sagun and Engr. Jessa P. Tiza from DILG ZSP FO, and Engr. Frederik Tulse Ocupe from DILG ZDN FO. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with comments highlighting the informativeness and practicality of the sessions, as well as the expertise of the instructors. One participant noted, “The workshop was highly informative and practical. The hands-on sessions were particularly beneficial.” Another remarked, “Excellent training with knowledgeable instructors and well-organized sessions.”

The workshop concluded with a wrap-up and feedback session, summarizing the key takeaways. Participants were awarded certificates of completion, acknowledging their enhanced proficiency in contract management and construction supervision.
